Mallorca - Towns: to get facelift
Dilapidated town centres on Mallorca could be given a facelift under a new scheme operated by the regional ministry for housing and public works.
Island town councils can now apply for economic aid to create parks, restore pavements or introduce new features into deteriorating areas. “Any project which improves the safe use of public areas will be considered”, said a ministry spokesman.
The scheme also allows the revitalisation of abandoned green areas, removal of rundown architectural features and a facelift of frontages of more than 20 years old.
Schemes which improve energy efficiency and water saving methods will be wellcomed, while projects to remove external electricity cables will qualify for the grants.
In additon, the ministry wants councils to prohibit flypostings in a bid to make towns more attractive. Individuals will be able to apply for renovation grants later in the year.
The project also aims to make use of homes which are currently standing empty.
